Having recently graduated University, my parents have asked me what I want for a graduation gift, and I told them an iPod.
Now the question becomes which iPod should I go for?
The mini for its size and aluminum case?
The 15 GB with no remote or dock? I would probably buy the Altec speakers instead of a dock if I went this way.
Or the 20 or 40 GB with dock and remote? Here I would probably lean towards the 40 GB, and offer to pay the difference.
Just wondering what thoughts everyone had on this.
Thanks,
Jim

If you can, go for the 40 GB. Get as much storage as possible. You might not think you need it now, but chances are you'll fill it up pretty quickly.

I would go for the 20GB since its smaller and lighter.

I would get the biggest one you can afford. If someone else is footing the bill, get the top of the line.
However, I would wait to buy, if you can. See this other thread for details, but the iPod is due for an update soon.

Oh, and as for the Mini... I personally think it's too small, and it's actually not that light (3.6oz vs 5.6oz). If you are a big jogger or something and you feel that the primary use will be listening while running, then maybe it makes sense. But if you plan to use it anywhere else and/or have a sizeable music library, the regular iPod is the way to go.

More info from ThinkSecret. I would wait on your purchase. Find something else to take on your trip. Heck, borrow an iPod.

My point is that I think the guy should find some other way to survive this trip without buying an iPod now. Get creative.

If you can wait for the announcement on the new iPods, it's likely worth it. If not, get the biggest one you can since it's a gift (but there's likely to be price reduction on white iPods, though the shipping date is another matter all together).

(Thought you said it was from your parents?) Sounds like they're predicting early August, which is 3-4 weeks away. And I'll bet that once they're announced you'll be able to order them, even if they're not available yet. (Apple has to stop doing that.)

Nope I never ask my parents for anything...My girlffriends buying me one because I bought her an iBook for her birthday and I sold my last iPod to pay for her rent.
Gonna pick up a mini today instead.
