hi gang,
i have been using the the new 23 inch display for most of the day then all of a suddedn my microsoft bluetooth mouse stopped responding and watching a dvd on the computer is causing my computer to crash, lock up and or go black around every 15 minutes.
i would have to restart from the computer to get the system up and running.
my wireless bluetooth apple mouse works and i 'm on a wireless apple keyboard.
i'm running 10.4 on a rev a 2 gig dual g5 with 3.5 gigs of crucial and samsung ram.
i have had this since it first came out and i think this is the first time i had to do a hard reboot off the computer.
when the start up screen comes up it has a blinking folder with a question mark and then goes through it's startup.
why is the computer now looking for a boot drive?
if anyone has any suggestions on what might be the problem or if anyone else is experiencing this please reply to this post.
the system has been rock solid until now.
i had watched a full length dvd prior when i first hooked up the monitor but i can't go 15 minutes without it crashing now.
i have not noticed anything unusual during regular surfing or emailing etc... except the microsoft bluetooh mouse not working.
the mouse will not work with my ibook either.
my wireless keyboard has worked throughout this episode.
i was able to pair my backup wireless apple mouse via remote desktop with my ibook.
that is all i can think of at the moment.

I hope that was a typo and you weren't really expecting to get support while running a beta OS My bluetooth did show as unavailable when I first booted (10.3.4 btw) with the 23" connected. I rebooted and all was well. Remember the built-in BT in the G5 is really on the USB bus and if you hooked up all the cables on the 23" the USB hub in it might be the culprit. Try unplugging the USB cable and see if it solves the problem.

yes, that was the typo. i'm running 10.3.4
i tried unplugging the usb part of the monitor cable from the cpu and rebooted but it still would not recognize the microsoft intellimouse explorere for bluetooth.
however, it would no longer work with my ibook either. there was no trauma to the mouse.
the other symptoms still occur. the apple bluetooth mouse works fine and other then the ms mouse not working, everything else occurred when i was working with the cpu after i was able to get the apple paired via apple remote desktop.
thank you for your suggestion.

If the MS mouse doesn't work with either the G5 or the iBook, then it sounds like a hardware issue with the mouse - a faulty G5 could not have physically damaged the MS mouse over a bluetooth signal. If new mouse batteries don't solve the issue, then its time to have MS fix it under warranty (assuming its still covered).
As for the blinking "?" at startup, check to make sure a valid startup disk is selected in the "Startup Disk" preference panel. A serious crash could have corrupted the setting causing the computer to run a search for a boot device after each boot.
And as for the black screen issue when watching DVDs, I think we'd need more info. Does it only occur when watching movies? How about other applications? (You suggest other apps cause no problem, but just checking) Does it also happen if you disconnect the new 23" display and connect a different display? How about different DVDs - crash with only one or with any movie??

the ms mouse is fried. it just happened to be coincidence occuring at the same time as the crashes.
the boot disc was deselected in system preferences so reselecting it got rid of the question mark folder during start up.
i have tried several different dvd's to recreate the crashing, freezing and black screen which only occured during dvd playback.
i was not able to recreate the instability.
i am confident it was the particular dvd i was watching, the movie 21 grams via netflix.
what threw me off i think was the ms mouse screwing up at the same time.
thanks for everyone's input.

Glad to hear all is resolved.
Too bad about the MS BT mouse... those things aren't cheap.
