So I'm considering getting a new monitor. for a while, I was thinking about LCD. but after weighing my options, here's what I've come up with...
#1. a 19" LCD would cost a boatload (~700) and i would only have 1280x1024 res. that's what I work at now, so the only real upgrade would be to go from CRT to LCD.
#2. Lacie makes a 19" CRT that goes for around $400 that does 1600x1200 at 85hz. anyone here work on a 19 at that resolution regularly? does everything get to small, or would I be OK?
Yes I think the extra resolution would be helpful, as I'm usually doing a lot at one time.

But do you do a lot a lot of the time? Seriously, LCDs are infinitely easier on the eyes (when compared with CRTs). Especially when compared with high resolution CRTs because of the lower refresh rates and flicker.
EDIT: Didn't notice the 85hz...that's pretty good, but, at the same time, incomparable to LCD comfort.

Just because a CRT can display 1600x1200, doesn't mean it does so with an acceptable quality. If you want to read lots of text or you need sharp images (i. e. not gaming), then you will probably choose the same resolution as the 19" LCD. BTW, a 19" CRT has a viewable area comparable to a 17" LCD.
If you work a lot on your computer and you don't need a calibrated monitor, an LCD is the way to go. I have a notebook since 1998, so I don't want to miss an LCD on my desk.

Yes, whenever I'm on my computer I'm a workhorse. I have found 1280x1024 to be very limiting. I really want the space and comfort of the LCD but the cost might be to much.

Check out dealmac's front page today. They have a Dell 20.1 inch LCD for $750 shipped. A very nice LCD for maybe a little more than you want to spend but I think for a 20.1 incher of very good quality and 1600x1200 res it's a good deal. It is listed under the peripherals about 1/2 way down the page.

1600x1200 on a 19" CRT would be REALLY small... I had a 21" monitor and I tried it at 1600x1200 but it hurt my eyes, even at 85 Hz. That's because the text is quite small and fuzzy... I got a headache in less than an hour.
And that was on a 21" monitor, let alone a 19", which is really a 17.8" monitor (CRTs are smaller than rated). No thanks.
I'd say go with the LCD. If you want more real estate, go with the suggested 20" Dell. The stand is ugly (c'mon, it's a Dell), but the LCD output isn't bad. You can get it for < $800 if you snag a special (which is like 50% of the time).

I dunno' but I found the Dell Stand quite Elegant. I have both the 23" Apple Cinema Display and the Dell 2001FP and I prefer the the Dell stand. If I want my Apple Display to do the same things I have to buy a $400 after market stand. So far my Apple Display has slid off my desktop at least three times and banged against the wall. I fixed this by nailing in a small strip behind the third leg of my Apple display(I also had this problem with my 15" Apple display.) While I love my Apple display I see the Dell Stand as quite clever and and can't forget the fact that for the cost my 23" Apple Display I could have bought 2 Dell 2001FP's and sat them side by side. With My Dell(Yes I bought from Dell even though I'm a Mac user) I can tilt it, raise it, rotate it, and it is very small on my desktop. I fail to see where it is ugly?

I have one of these at work connected to both my Mac (1.4GHz single G4) and PC (1.6GHz P-M Dell D800). Very nice monitor. Good color, sharp picture. My sole complaint is that the display is not quite as bright as I would have hoped (but still brighter than the 22" Cinema Display I've got at home).
Also has an internal 4-port USB 2.0 hub. Very handy.
4 video inputs: 1 VGA, 1 DVI, 1 composite video, 1 S-video.
The display pivots for those who have rotate capability on their video cards

I would not recommend 1600x1200 on a 19" CRT. I have tried it and it was quite uncomfortable. 21" seems about right for 1600x1200.
I used to run a dual 19" dual setup, then switched to a dual 21" setup which I later sold and bought a 20" Cinema Display. LCDs are definitely worth it

Wow. The first 2 cinema displays I had NEVER had the back leg problem. My current one does but nowhere near that bad o_O
I just stick a power brick or something back there to keep my monitor from sliding back too far

Which monitor? The Dell 2001FP?
Not sure of its pixel response speed (not listed AFAICT on Dell's website), but sure seems fast enough to me. I don't see ghosting on DVD movies, though since the machine is at work, I've never played any games on it.
Oh, BTW - $719 currently!! That's a freaking good price for a high-quality 20" LCD. Might have to pick up a second one
