I've started seeing some neat applications of notes, but they only work on 3rd/4th gen ipods. I was just wondering if there's anything hardware wise that forces this, or whether apple have chosen to only implement it in software.

If it's software, it seems daft to me, to not allow all the 1st and 2nd gen ipods not to have it. I certainly won't buy a new ipod for that feature. I love my 2nd gen and the battery life I get with it.

Same reason that Apple doesn't let 3rd Gen iPod owners have shuffle on their main menu - Apple didn't offer the upgrade!
