I have a 15gig 3G ipod and I have had for over a year. Recently the battery life has really been lacking. But my question is, is it normal for the battery to drain rapidly while not being charged. I turn my comp. off before I go to sleep (between 11:30 and 12am) and the ipod is fully charged and when I wake up (between 8am and 9am) to use it to run, and half of the battery is drained. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Duo

I don't think you are supposed to leave the ipod plugged in while the computer is off. I did that one time and the ipod's battery was very low the next day. Now I just unplug it before I go to bed.

Its not that I leave it plugged in, I just leave it in the dock. And the dock happens to be attached to the compuer.

Ok, I'll take my ipod out of the dock tonight before I go to bed and see what the battery life is in the morning.

According to apple, the ipod battery is designed for peak use for upto 300 - 400 recharge cycles. After that it will hold significantly less charge. A battery replacement will fix your problem. You can read more about it here: Apple iPod . I suspect that after a year you have probably recharged it every night so you've maxed out the peak life of the battery.

This is nothing new to apple or the iPod. Laptop batteries work the same way; I've replaced batteries on my old IBM ThinkPad several times. In another couple of months, my Powerbook will also need a battery replacement. Consider your battery to be good for a year or so. After that it will hold less and less charge and at some point you will have to replace it.

On a side note, I woke up the other day to find my car dead in the driveway. The AAA guy who showed up to jump my car scolded me for not changing the car battery after 3 years. Learnt something new!

The AAA gut is an idiot! A quality auto battery given proper maintainance will last much longer than 3 years. The original battery in my car lasted 7 years. The replacement lasted 9 years! All I had to do was to check the levels and add distilled water when necessary. Neither battery ever needed a jumpstart.

I have been looking at my ipod today and it doesn''t want to charge past the half-way point. So I am left with two options leave it alone or get a new battery. Has any one tried to replace the battery on their own? I have been to a number of sites, that sell new batteries and have a step by step walkthrough, seems easy enough (at least I hope).

The reason the ipod loses charge is that while connected it doesn't "deep" sleep as it must wake when the computer turns on. it is really annoying.
I am now going to tell the computer what he can do with a life-times supply of chocolate.
