Well guys, I'm off to college soon. I will be taking my PB with me.
Right now, I own a set of Klipsch 5.1's. I'm not so sure as to what I am going to do with them yet. Since my PB can't acheive 5.1 without external hardware, I'm debating taking them. I was almost thinking about purchasing 2 nice monitors, or a 2.1 system. Thing is, I don't really know where to start looking. I don't know too much about speakers either. Obviously I am looking for something nice, nothing extremely expensive, but I don't want cheap. I'm looking for good all around sound quality. Perhaps you guys could provide some suggestions?

Also, I'm debating even buying new speakers. Maybe a good set of headphones would suit me better coupled with my 5.1's and an M-Audio Sonica Theatre.

Thanks guys.

Is it "necessary" to have a subwoofer like I find it to be with my Klipsch 5.1's if I was using "studio monitors"?

I listen to all types of music, and do enjoy some decent bass. Then again, a college dorm really isn't the place for all that bass anyway. I'm wondering if M-Audio Monitors would have the capibility to reproduce those low tones and give me that bump.

i have the 5" m-audios on the floor of my bedroom, and had to turn them upside down...too much bass.

if u get a subwoofer, make friends with whoever's downstairs & next door first..

Bass response depends as much on speaker placement as on the speakers themselves. The closer a woofer is to reflective surfaces, the more the bass frequencies are reinforced. If you put a woofer or subwoofer in a corner or under a desk, you'll hear more bass than if you put it in the middle of the room. It won't necessarily be smoother or deeper (in fact, I prefer to keep my sub out in the room), but you'll at least have the impression of more bass. Just moving a woofer a few inches away from a surface can make a difference (which is why fisher turned his upside-down).

Subs are important if you're using small satellite speakers like the Apple Pros or the Klipsches - it's the only way to get bass. However, a pair of small two-ways like the M-Audios should give you enough decent bass for a small dorm room. The disadvantage is that they take up more desk space than satellites.

Thanks for the replies so far guys. I wish I knew more about audio.
At any rate, I was starting to think, maybe I'll just save some money for some other things and purchase a Sonica Theatre. I could just take all 5 speakers with me, as I'm sure my room mate wouldn't mind having surround sound in the room. Problem is, I've heard mixed things about the Sonica Theatre.

Also, if I were to purchase the Sonica Theatre, I could also probably get a decent pair of headphones, altho I'm not so sure where to start looking there either.
