How many styles of Airport card has there been? I was only aware of the Airport card for G3 iBooks and the Airport Extreme card that's in the G4 iBook, Powerbook etc.

I have a friend who wants to install Airport cards in two G3 iMac's (a 400mhz and a 450mhz). He has told me you can get an adaptor card that lets you stick an Airport Extreme card in a computer designed for an Airport card. Is that so? Were there different sized Airport cards (eg different for iMac and iBook G3s?).

Thanks

There is no way for a G3 iMac to use an Airport Extreme card. However, those iMacs can use a regular Aiport card when it is connected via an adaptor. There are only two kinds of airport card, regular 802.11b and extreme 802.11g The adaptors can be purchased from online resellers, and on Ebay. Below is a link to Powermax.com showing the necessary adaptor:

The price has gone up a bit lately because these are no longer in production. In the old days they came free with the airport card.

The adapters can be found on eBay for practically free, since almost nobody who got it free with the card needed the adapter (since most AirPort cards went in laptops, not iMacs!).
