Does the iPod remote kill sound quality? The mini-plug from the remote to the ipod is silver, not gold plated. Most headphone/earphone makers gold plate their plugs and claim it gives better sound quality etc. Does the remote's silver plug affect sound quality?

No.

Those that make most of their money selling to fools do.

The only advantage that gold-plating has over unplated metal is that the contacts will not oxydize over time. However, since nearly all other manufacturers chrome-plate their contacts, there is no advantage other than bling factor and $$$ for the manufacturer. Also, since you insert/remove the headphones regularly, oxydization is knocked off all the time, anyway.

Do not worry about the lack of gold-plating on the iPod's remote.

serious?!? Wow .. I've just been schooled on the subject =P Thanks!
I dont buy in to most things like blind sheep, but i noticed that sony products ship with really cheap "stock" headphones that have silver plugs. It seems most free/crappy headphones come with silver plugs. I didnt know it was oxidation, I assumed it some how affected sound/transmission etc. Thanks again

They 'say' it improves sound quality, but it's a complete load of crap for sure. Go into any half decent recording studio and I can pretty much guarantee you wont find many gold plated connections in there. So if they don't need it, then consumer gear certainly doesn't either.
The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Indeed. The gold plating is nice, but soft. In a studio or broadcast setting, the gold would wear off in no time. (That's what happened to the gold plating on my 7 year old Sony headphones. Not that the lack of gold harmed anything.)

Not to mention the fact that when you get a gold / tin connection happening, the gold actually does start to corrode. (or so I'm told)
