Hi! This may be a stupid question, but I'll ask anyway. I just got my first iPod (4G 40 GB), and it says it only has 37.2 GB total available storage. Is this normal? If I restore the iPod, will I gain some of the storage back? What do you all think? Thanks!

It's normal.
40GB as advertised means 40,000,000,000 bytes (1 kilobyte=1000 bytes). To the computer, 1 kilobyte=1024 bytes, which results in about 37GiB (40,000,000,000 divided by [1024x1024x1024]).

This is the same way it works with any hard drive. Check the one in your computer ... if its a 80gb drive, it'll usually show about 73gb .. my 160gb drive has about 148gb of "real" space. As Tooki's math shows, its always about 93% of the advertised space.

20,000,000,000/(1024*1024*1024)
you have a calculator. figure it out.
OR, using the 93% figure, i would wager a guess at 18.6gb. (which is also 37.2/2 btw)
