We've had this 21 inch CRT for years now, but recently it's been just sitting around unused. The last time it was used was about 3 months ago where it worked fine. Now, it's been moved about 20 feet away and connected to the same powermac G4 (AGP model i believe) and it does not work. the Mac works on a normal 17 inch crt, but when connected (the power is connected to a known good outlet, the usb cable is plugged in and the vga cable is properly connected to the video card) to the 21 inch the power light comes on, but there is no picture only the faint sound of something turning on inside the display. hitting the colorsync button on the display does nothing, messing with the contrast/brightness buttons does nothing etc. now, according to the service manual it says to make sure the connections are good (check) that the resolution is set to a native resolution of the monitor (check, 800x600 just to be safe), and then they pretty much expect you to dismantle the thing and risk life and limb to replace the video board or jumpers or fuses. can anybody out there think of anything else that can be tried instead of resorting to a full take apart of the crt?
thanks

On a related note.. I've got a 21" studio display too (way back from when they matched the B&W G3). The last time I used it was 3 apartments ago, so I've moved this monster twice without even plugging it in. I have no idea if it still works, and quite frankly I'm afraid to find out. I've since bought a pair of samsung LCDs which are about 1/20th of the weight and take up 1/20th of desk space. I hate to want to get rid of this studio display, but I just dont have a use for it anymore, and I’m kinda tired of moving with it! I'd give it to one of my pc-using friends, but last time I tried I couldn’t get it to work with a PC (couldn’t adjust the screen size). Any suggestions? I'd ebay it, but I'd probably spend more on shipping the damn thing than I would get for it. there's gotta be something I can do with it other than just throwing it away -- it's the same size as my TV!

If it's a work monitor. Can't work pay for new one ? Without a monitor you can't perform too much, right ? I don't think it's worth it to repair that beast. If you need a CRT you could look at a LaCie. And there are a lot of other cheap CRT options.

well it's an "extra" work monitor so they'd just give us a used and crappy old crt in its place so it was kind of the best thing to use

A crt only lasts about 4-5 years. And for use in graphics a crt will only properly calibrate about 3 years. You can probably get away with a couple of more years for word, excell, e-mail, etc. I would not repair a monitor that is more than 3 years old unless its a really cheap fix.
