I'm sure this question has been asked before (and probably countless times), but are 3G iPods interchangable between Win and OSX?

I searched the archives, but I couldn't find any threads, except for a 1G iPod.

Main reason I'm asking is because a coworker is getting rid of her's (think its either the 30 gig?) and is willing to letting me have it for $150, but i wanted to make sure that it was interchangable between win and osx

[edit]
just emailed coworker and she told me its the "40gb iPod clickwheel with dock"

You have to reset the ipod first. On the windows machine, go to the ipod software and click the restore button. The ipod can only be used on either windows or mac, but you can reset it to factory settings, then choose whichever OS you want to use it on.

You may use it on Windows and Mac, however it MUST be "fat32" format not HFS.ect.

I use my 15g gen3 on 3 Mac's and a windows box.

It can only "sync" with one copy of iTunes, but you can use it with as many copies of iTunes as you want, and as many computers as you want. Works in linux too, just no iTunes

Step One: Check that your hold switch is off by sliding the switch away from the headphone jack.

Step Two: Perform a hard reset by doing the following: Hold down the 'Menu' and‘Play/Pause' buttons simultaneously for approximately 10 Seconds. You should see the Apple logo when it restarts. If that doesn't work, connected your iPod to a power source using the iPod Adapter or a CPU with a FireWire port, then try the buttons. Your iPod should mount on your computer now. If not, go to step 3.

Step Three: Restart the iPod as explained above, then as soon as you see the Apple logo, let go, and then hold down the "Fast Forward" and "Rewind" buttons. This will force your iPod into 'Disk Mode'. At this point your iPod may show up on the desktop. If not, try restarting the computer.

Step Four: Once your iPod is in "Disk Mode" (it should say that on the top of the iPod's LCD screen) and is flashing the "Do not disconnect" icon, you should be all set.

If anything happens to your ipod (internally) while doing this, apple will not cover it.

well i did as was advised.

i had my coworker reset the iPod, but i noted that it still said it was the windows version. so she took it home and tried it again.

brought it back today and i left it alone. figured that once i hook it up to my g4, it'll snap to attention.

so i get home and plug it up and it tells me its windows version and that i'll have to use the widows restore.

noticed that the iPod utility was still open so i just clicked restore and it took off from there -

now i have a 30 gig 3G iPod, and for only $100!

thanks all!
