The only double-layer DVD burners out there will burn a double-layer DVD+R disc at 2.4x. You can burn single-layer DVD-R and DVD+R discs at 8x in them, but double layer burning is still at 2.4x. You'll have to wait if you want faster burning - and if you don't need it right away, I'd say you should definitely wait. Double layer discs hold twice as much data, and you'd be burning that data at approximately 1/3 the speed of an 8x. So while burning a 4.4 GB single layer DVD-R at 8x takes about eight minutes, burning an 8.8 GB dual layer DVD+R at 2.4x would take 50 minutes.
Dual layer DVD burners should get faster and more mainstream fairly soon. Unless you need one right now, it might be better just to wait.
