I have had great luck and results from a Canon LiDE 30, USB powered so no power cord too...
Canon LiDE 30 + Photoshop is a great combo.

When I was running OS 9, I was happy with Umax. However, when they refused to put out OS X drivers for their lower end scanners, I went with an Epson, which I've been very happy with. I'm not up on their latest lineup, but I would consider giving them a shot.

Yeah, do any of the (affordable) scanners ship with firewire now?

... until you need updated drivers and discover that they don't have them posted and you have to pay $15 to have them mail you a CD.
HP's software is awful anyway.

Not that I have seen. Although some ship with USB 2.0 which is good enough.
Be careful though as I have seen canon scanners say that on a Mac only USB 1.0 works.

I concur with the person who said the lide 30 by canon, it and photoshop are a great combo. The USB 1.1 thing doesn't bother me b/c I have a FP imac 800 mhz, which doesn't have 2.0http://forums.macnn.com/newreply.php?s=&action=newreply&threadid=2 25491#

I was looking at the lide 50 (found it for $80) but then read some reviews..
Caution to MAC OS X users, February 5, 2004
Reviewer: An electronics fan
This scanner has been a nightmare. Before purchasing the scanner I called Canon and asked then if it worked with Mac OS X.3. They assured me it would work just fine.
I am running Mac OS X.3 and installed the LIDE 50 Scanner with assistance from the Canon Phone Tech Support (not toll free). After they walked me through the software installation, the scanner did not work. The Canon Tech person then instructed me to download a new Toolbox and a new Driver from their website. After downloading I called them back and had them guide me through these installations too.
After the new installations, the scanner worked, but when I opened iPhoto all my photos had disappeared. My library and albums were gone and the windows were completely blank. IPhoto had worked perfectly minutes before the installation.
The Canon tech tried to figure out what had happened but after about an hour of trying things and me getting nervous as the tech did not seem sure of himself and was giving up, I thanked him for all his help and asked him if we could get the opinion of a Supervisor or Senior Tech. He politely agreed and a Supervisor came onto the phone and told me that he would have a Senior Tech call me.
The Senior Tech called me a few hours later and said he had reviewed the problem and had determined that "there was no way that the Canon product could have caused the problem and it must be your computer" and he would not be able to help me.
I explained to him that the computer was 2 months old and my machine and software worked perfectly up to the minute the Canon software was installed. I explained that immediately after the scanner software was installed, iPhoto just became non functioning and my photos disappeared. I also told him that while I was waiting for his call, I had spent several hours on the phone with Apple and they could not solve the problem (they tried for hours )but said the evidence made it clear that something was going on with the new installations.
The Canon Tech just repeated several times that he had determined that it was impossible that the Canon scanner had caused the problems and he could not help me.
I said I was disatisfied and upset and I would like to speak with someone I could appeal to. I was connected to a "corporate supervisor" who said, "I'm not a technician, but I've been told that it was impossible that the Canon scanner or software caused the problem..sorry, we can't help you." End of discussion.
So, now my photos are gone, iPhoto is non functioning and I have spent hours on the phone and nothing is fixed...and no help from Canon.
I rate Canon customer service as poor, unsatisfactory, and insulting. The product I rate as poor, nonfunctioning and a definate NO-NO for Mac OS X.3 .

I can't say enough bad things about its OS X Drivers, December 19, 2003
Reviewer: An electronics fan
I got one of these for a friend and I am appalled at how bad the drivers are for OS X.
The scanner does NOT work with OS X's "Image Capture" application, and the provided application is hideous.
It looks ugly.
It has horribly translated dialogs and instructions.
I can't even allow you to select standard applications (such as Preview) for viewing the scans.

now these are a few months old, but I think I will steer clear of this one, it seems to me that the scanning situation for macs is kinda poor at the moment, I do not have photoshop, yet it seems it is required to have the lide 30 work correctly..yet I don't really want usb 1.1 either, that slims things down a bit. how are the epsons?
