hello.

i am looking to purchase a new scanner. i had expression 800 epson, but somehow scsi adapter stopped working. besides, i rarely scan and i am looking for a "light" scanner. i like the design of hp's SJ4670 SJ4670 see-thru vertical scanner. i will mainly scan documents and some photographs, magazine clippings, to view on powerbook screen or print if i have to on epson photo 980. but i read bad reviews on epinion.com about hp's scanner. other one i am considering is canon LiDE-80 48bit flatbed scanner. have you used them? which one do you suggest? any other suggestion on thin scanners? i am looking to spend about/less than $200 as i hardly scan.

thank you for any advise in advance. have a great day!

I like HP's vertical scanners as well, however most people in this forum would probbably recommend a canon scanner.

I really hope more makers besides HP begin to bring vertical style scanners to the market. Such a space saver!

I'd recommend the Lide 80 (or 50). the Lide 50 can be had for less than $90 and comes with PhotoShop Elements 2.0 ($99 retail). So, if the Canon ends up not meeting your needs ... you got your money's worth in software at least

My own personal experience is that HP's scanner drivers are terrible. The "HP Communications" program (a background process required for scanning) still doesn't work with Fast User Switching. Every new Mac OS X revision seems to break the drivers and it takes months for HP to get a fix out the door. Their email support is a joke and their "driver update" email lists don't work.

Here's a review of the HP:

http://www.macaddict.com/issues/0402/rev.scanjet.html

I think it's been reviewed in one of the PC mags as well. The Canons seem to get consistently good reviews, but I've never used one. For casual scanning, either model should do.

Smart move. Those HP's look good in pictures as they LOOK metal but they are just cheap plastic. Not to mention the software for HP inkjets and scanners is terrible.
"Curse my metal body, I wasn't fast enough!"
