Can I use a Bluetooth type headseat with my desktop computer? Will the G4 pick up the device and allow me to use it as a microphone/headset with IChat or Softphone software?

If you use a setup like this, how happy are you with the voice quality and technology adaptation?

...or noone else thought of this. I'd like to use it with my Vonage softphone, I guess I'll just buy one and try it. Maybe I'll report if it works.

I have Vonage, but not the softphone. If you want, maybe I could try yours with you on my T637 I got today.

If vonage uses X-Lite as their softphone (and I think they do) - then yes you can use a BT headset.

(X-Lite Prefs - System Settings - Speaker Audio Device / Microphone Audio Device )

so the Bluetooth headset will be recognized as a speaker/mic, so I could also use it for Ichat and other apps?

Actually I picked up a BT headset just for using iChat. Once its set up and configured as a BT device, you can go into the 'Video' part of the iChat preferences and select the headset as both a microphone and a speaker. The nice thing is, at least with my headset, is that I can leave the headset in 'standby mode' and when I get an incoming audio or video chat, it turns on.

I'm using a BT400 G3 headset I bought from the Apple Store in Osaka. So far I'm happy with it and looking forward to using it with a nice BT phone when I get back to the States next semester.

I'm not using a BT adaptor, I'm using the internal BT in my 12in Rev c Powerbook.

Overall its a nice thing to have when audio and video chatting, and it picks up less environment noise then does my iSight or internal Mic. Its not too tough to set up, and I'm sure if I took the time I could make it do even more funkey things.

I just had this idea also.

Er, so, if I bought a bluetooth mic - say, something that would work with my SE Z600 as well - it could be set up to work like a normal mic, similar to the built-in one on my PowerBook?

I think it would be sweet to have the headset on while away from the computer, I could control iTunes, check my email... it'd just be cool. ^_^

Not to thread jack, but is it possible to use a bluetooth enabled cell phone as a headset with iChat, Skype, Vonage SoftPhone, etc? I have a T610 and it would be great to use it instead of the microphone/speakers that are built into my PowerBook.

Thanks - Branden.

not possible - not unless the handset supports "Headset Profile" - which it does not.
