It says in the manual that the ipod won't charge while its connected, like transfering stuff or listening to music off it from the computer. But, I've had it connected all day and my battery just shows 100% and the little charge icon is there, and when its low and I plug it in it does the charge animation even while transfering stuff.
Is it actually keeping its self charged? I don't want to end up killing the battery on here having it discharge and recharge while its connected all the time, since I listen to music off it from iTunes on the computer.

It does not say that.

I believe if you keep it pluged into a Firewire port you are ok. I think the no charge while transfering files is for the USB 2 connector.

That could be right. It certainly does charge while connected to a Firewire port.

I have a slightly different question to raise ... If you have an iPod mini connected via USB to a windows pc, and then unmount the iPod so you can use it to listen to music while it's still drawing power from the USB port, is the iPod being charged?
I did exactly this the other day at work as I had run out of battery but still wanted to listen to music at my desk. The battery icon on the iPod is not animated when this is happening. When I unplugged it, it still had some juice in it. The reason why I didn't just play my music through iTunes was because my iPod is formatted for my PB at home and of course iTunes on windows doesn't like mac iPods

Version 3.0.1 of the iPod software changed that and it allows you to charge via USB2. If you plug it in the iPod starts to charge. I sometimes wish there was a button or something that would allow you to disable charging and enable it when you wanted the iPod to charge.
