I have been using my 3G ipod on a windows PC because I do not have OS X on my G3 iMac (currently running OS 9). I want to upgrade the mac to OS X so that I can use the ipod straight from there. However, my question is will the ipod reset when I connect it to a different computer from the one I have been using. The reason I ask is because on the PC I had to configure the ipod in order for the computer to recognize it. Does the mac do the same thing to the ipod? If so, I don’t want the ipod to reset and erase all my songs. And if it does, is there a way around this? Thanks a lot.

AFAIK it will nuke all your songs.
There are a bazillion iPod utilities on Version Tracker. Many of these are for copying songs off your iPod.

an ipod can only be "registered" to one computer.
so if i take mine and plug it into a friend's mac it will ask me if i want to put all their itunes songs onto it, thus deleting all of mine.
so yes you will lose your music.
what would i do? transfer all your music from your current 'ipod computer' to your new one and then re"register" it with the new computer. thus no music loss.

If you plug the iPod into the new computer and say 'No' to the transfer of music then set the iPod to be Managed Manually.
That way you can have an iPod on more than one computer no problem at all.
What you can't do with iTunes is then get the music off the iPod, you need a 3rd party piece of software that can move the music for you.
What you can do is listen to the music on the G3 Mac from the iPod.
The best thing to do, is connect the iPod to the G3 and se tit to be manually managed.
Then get the software you need from www.versiontracker.com that let's you move the music from your iPod to iTunes on the G3.
Once complete (check the number of songs first), set the iPod to update automatically.

I'm not sure if all of the answers were clear. No, you will not lose your music just by plugging the iPod into another computer. Yes, you will lost your music if you plug it in AND tell it to sync with the new machine.
