Well, the burner in my little white iMac seems to have given up the ghost. It reads disks, but constantly coasters disks when trying to burn.

So, I'm looking for a decent, reasonably priced external that will do the same duty. I'd be willing to slap something in an enclosure if the price were significantly less than a comparable pre-built.

Any advice?

First choice would be the Pioneer DVR-107D, at $83 shipped. This one is natively supported in OS 10.3.3 and later. Burns DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs at 8x too.

Second choice would be the NEC ND-2510A, for $69 shipped. This one is not natively supported in OS X, but it is the drive used by LaCie for their external DVD burners so they have OS X drivers that work in 10.3.2 or later. Plus, this one is a dual-layer drive. You can burn single layer DVD-Rs and DVD+Rs at 8x like the Pioneer, but you can also burn dual layer DVD+Rs at 2.4x. Keep in mind, burning a 9 GB DVD at only 2.4x will take a long time, but at least you will have the capability.

As for an enclosure, there are a bunch that will work fine. I got all these prices from NewEgg.com, and they have plenty of 5.25" Firewire enclosures there as well. The cheapest is $40, but if you're willing to spend $10 or $15 more you can get a nicer looking one that doesn't have a noisy fan in it.

Thanks, this is really helpful. I'd actually never visited NewEgg. Great stuff.

Is there anyway to see what bridge is being used in these different enclosures?

Have you tried cleaning the drive in the iMac?

Buy a DVD cleaner disc, you may find it's dirt that is preventing quality burns, reading is easier as there is error correction.

Yeah, I've done it several times. It's possible that it just REALLY dirty.

I generally get about 99% done in Toast, and then get a media error . . .
