My 2nd Gen 20G ipod simply up and died on me last month. Won't power up, reset - nothing. Anyone have suggestions as to what to do with it? I hate to simply toss it (the HD's prolly still good - how to test?) - there must be *something* one can do with it...

What happens when you connect it up to your computer? If it's visible in disk utility, you could use that to format it..

i would..

A) Bring it to a Genius Bar
B) Sell it on Ebay
C) Show it off .. you were an early adopter!
D) Keep it as a souvenir, or donate it to a museum (museum of modern art .. for one)
E) That's one cooooool paperweight

F) Smack me upside the head for posting such nonsense.

Condolences for your iPod .. hopefully the Genius Bar will be able to fix it. If not .. hey .. need a laptop? Cram and Jam Baby!

I've been able to revive my 5 GB iPod by doing the following: remove the back cover, disconnect the battery cable from the main board for a few minutes, reconnect the battery cable, and plug it into the Mac.

This has brought it back when it was completely non-responsive. Good luck!

If you go to one of the millions of ipod sights on the net like www.ipodlounge.com you should be able to find instructions on how to crack open your ipod.
Good luck!!

That just isn't right..the iPod has been tested, and is known not to work. It'd be scamming someone out of their hard earned money, and I know I'd be pretty pissed if i bought one like that.

Sell it as working, ship it with insurance and then say shipping damaged it. Ship it to your mom if you have to.

Yikes, I'd like to think we could find an answer that didn't involve mail fraud.

I'm gonna see if i can't pry the back off it this weekend, figgure out some way to test the HD once I'm in there to see if it's still good.

Once the case is opened, directly below the firewire connector at the top of the ipod, there's a fairly large texas instruments imbedded chip. When the ipod is connected via firewire to the computer or charger, there's still no activity on the ipod (no display active, controls non functional, nothing mounts on the desktop), but this chip begins to heat up. My guess is that the chip simply blew, and that the HD is still good, but i've no way to test that.

Thanks for you input all, as always, if there's more to be had, i'm glad to listen.

Seb
