In trying to copy a 12GB imovie project file to my Lacie external drive the copy process gets hung up at about 80MB. The light on the drive keeps flashing but the transfer seems to get frozen.

I've got the same EXACT problem. Very annoying isn't it?

you could use an app called split&concact to split the file into smaller ones then rejoin them once they've copied to the fw drive. That isn't the most elegant solution, but it is a workaround and one that will yield success.

I don't think the file size is the problem. I tried transferring smaller files and I get the same problem. I've never had problems transferring large files to and from this drive in the past. We're missing something here.
Thanks for your suggestion but there's more to this problem than file size.
Anyone else know a possible solution??

try checking the drive for errors, physical and file-related.
also repair permissions on your own system.

I think y'all's hard drives have issues. I have a 250 GB external LaCie that I use via fw 800 on my G5 and fw 400 on my iBook, and it hasn't displayed this issue. Yet. Knock on wood.
Will Tech Tools do a scan on an external drive? Don't see why it wouldn't.

Well I sent an e-mail to Lacie regarding this problem. One of their suggestions was to simply try another firewire cable. Well believe it or not, it worked! I have no idea why. I have used this cable with this drive since I got it with no problems. I am now using the "broken" cable to import video through an analog/digital converter with no problems. I find this very wierd. Anyone have any idea why this simple change of a cable seems to have solved my problem??

Bizarre problems often lead to bizarre solutions! No idea why your drive didn't like one particular cable. Was the problematic cable the firewire cable provided by LaCie with the drive? Wonder if they shipped off a batch of cables with issues, and aren't bringing it up until someone complains.
