I just purchased this drive from Amazon, a good deal I thought.
Until I tried to install it yesterday. I formatted it in Mac OS Extended with Disk Utility and this is also a supplement to my Maxtor 80 GB I've had for three years. A Maxtor drive is in the LaCie according to Disk Utility. I began copying files from the Maxtor to the Lacie and my startup disk, until it just stopped dead cold in its tracks of writing data to it. It then wouldn't mount at all, but is still recognized by Disk Utility. I formatted it again (without Journaling) and then proceeded to copy other data to it. Same thing happened!

Now, I'm in a bind where if I try to erase the drive, it won't mount and just shows the drive as "disk2s10". I had Disk Warrior work on it and unfortunately, it quit because of an error that happened twice.

What I'm doing now (and all morning all) is erasing the hard drive in Mac OS Extended format with no journaling and writing zeros to all sectors. Any more suggestions or tips in dealing with these drives?

I simply refuse to believe that these are defective products from LaCie. I have a LaCie CD burner that is a trooper and a tried and true Maxtor HD.

NOTE: Maxtor is connected directly to PowerBook Pismo FW port and LaCie CD Burner is daisy-chained to Maxtor.
LaCie Porsche HD is connected directly to PB Pismo FW port.

I had a similar problem using disk warrior. If your running panther you need to upgrade disk warrior to version 3.0.2. After I did that it was able to save my Lacie drive.

So let me get this straight.
I have DW 3.0.1. Disk Utility just finished with the erasure of the drive and now it mounts and all. I don't want to copy anything to it this time since I know it will just stop dead in its tracks while transfering information and then I'm stuck again.

I tried DW again and it failed to rebuild the directory for the disk; it said it was too heavily damaged, whatever that means. Are you saying that if I upgrade to 3.0.2 everything will be good again? Or should I just take a chance for the third time and see if the drive can actually hold something over 5 GB?!

Ive got the 80GB version of the drive... I had similar problems, would format it, copy data to it, reboot comp and it wouldnt mount... after 2 or 3 days it settled down and now works perfectly... been working for like 3 months now with no problems... very strange.

Our two cases are similar in that we both got error messages running disk warrior. In my case I was running disk warrior 3.0. It was able to create a replacement directory but couldn't replace the damaged directory because of an error. I couldn't boot from the disk warrior CD either. Then I found out from the Alsoft website that I needed version 3.0.2 because I am running Panther. In your case I don't know if the upgrade will help or not. It may be worth a try.
