So I get cable TV in my dorm room, and happen to have both an EyeTV and an Alchemy DVR (got that one for free). Some of the stations come in perfect, but some come in with black flecks or lines. Is there anything I can do hardware wise to filter out these artifacts?

I am thinking of buying either a EyeTV or an Alchemy DVR. Which one would you reccomend and how do they stack up against each other?

(Sorry I have no advice on the cable problem.)

They both have strengths and weaknesses. Im currently using both (I split my coax jack). The picture quality is better on the alchemy, and you can also use it to hookup video game consoles. However, the tivo functionality (pause live TV, rewind, record programs), works better on the EyeTV. Im using the EyeTV USB, so it is mpeg-1.

I have the eyetv200 and it works great for me. You can really get it looking good on a 23" cinema display. Of course that's in mpeg 2 with 15mbps sample rate and if you record at the frequency it's almost 7GB per hour but it sure does look good..

Here's a blind stab at your cable problem. Have you tried unplugging the splitter and using just one at a time? It might be that low signal strength is causing the strange reception. Just a guess.

are you using full screen on the 23" display?

I'm planning on using my *future* 23-inch cinema display with an eyeTV [i currently have the USB, but plan to get the 200] and playing television at full screen.

how does this look? screenshots?
