My five year old 21" Apple Studio Display with ColorSync (CRT) has been displaying an increasing number seemingly random horizontal lines and other temporary distortions for the past few weeks. More recently, scary noises have accompanied the random horizontal line appearances.

Can this sort of thing be repaired? If so, should I? This display is long out of warranty and the "genius" at the local Apple Store wasn't even sure if Apple still supported it.

Or am I better off buying a new monitor?

LaCie's displays are awfully tempting...
