So yeah, Don't know when this started happening, but I've got my iPod hooked up via firewire, and it charges all right, but it doesn't show up in itunes, or in the finder, or in disk utility or anywhere else.
So, how the hell am I supposed to upload my new songs on to it if itunes can't sync with it? How the hell do I fix this?

It's not a drinking problem if I don't have a problem with it.

it's kind of strange, i thought the problem is related to the earlier g4 model. But the imac g4 seems pretty recent to me. Have you try using your usb2 port? i am using it and it works fine but just don't use that when your ipod's battery is low and also don't use usb2 port when updating firmware.

Have you tried resetting the iPod and reconnecting it? To reset it, hold the center select button and the Menu button down together for 5-10 seconds (I think). Solved the same problem for me with my 4G iPod and dual 2.5Ghz G5.

Thanks
i read an article, forgot which one, saying that apple modified the firewire chipset on the new 4g ipod and it causes incompatibility with the earlier g3 and g4 models with built-in firewire. I have a b/w g3 and a 12" powerbook. The new 4G syncs with my powerbook but it doesn't mount consistently on my b/w g3 and the transfer speed is way too slow, almost like an usb 1.1 connection. I can confirm that because my b/w g3 syncs fine with my 3G and 1G ipod and i don't have any other firewire connection on another port. So it must be something wrong with the 4G ipod with the earlier built in firewire computer,
Fortunately, the new ipod works with usb2 but it can't charge and sync ipod at the same time. I tried to update the firmware on the new 4G ipod but it gave me a "plug-in to power adapter icon" and i have to used my powerbook to update the firmware using firewire.
i don't know why apple hasn't say anything so far, is it maybe an isolated issues with some unlucky users like me?
