This last weekend my Powerbook, iPod and mobile-phone were taken from my home. In order to provide the police and insurance company with the right data I need to retrieve my iPod's serial#. Is there a way to get this number from my iMac, to which it has been synchronizing?

Any help would be appreciated!
Thanks,

Harm

I'm sure it's in a plist somewhere. Try opening the iTunes plist, or the iTunes XML file in your Music folder and searching for it there.

Good luck.

Do you not have the box or a receipt for the purchase?

The SN is on the outside of the iPod box, and the receipt should do as proof of ownership.

No, after moving last spring I thru out the box... I bought the iPod at a local store (Dixons) the don't print serials on their receipts. And the serial is requested by the police to be able to trace the iPod whenever they encounter such a device. In the meantime I contacted Apple in Holland to ask them if they could provide provide me with the number, afterall I registered the thing. Sadly they could not help me!?
I also looked through some .plist files but the only thing I found was a device number. The serial, which if I remembered well begins with an "U", was not noted. But maybe I'm not looking in the right place?

i checked my com.apple.iPod.plist when my ipod wasnt connected and its in there.

open in textedit. i assume the serial number is model-specific. finding that out would help find the serial number in that list. the plist on my computer lists a couple different serial numbers. one matches my new ipod. the other one is probably the old one.

Oke, the only number I could think off is this; 000A270002099999 (but then sligtly different ) I found this one in my plist.
The iPod I had was one of Rev A (5 Mb). Could this be the number?

Code:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"> <plist version="1.0"> <dict> <key>Devices</key> <dict> <key>000A2700020127AA</key> <dict> <key>Connected</key> <date>2004-08-16T00:54:48Z</date> <key>Family ID</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>Firmware Version</key> <integer>287</integer> <key>ID</key> <string>000A2700020127AA</string> <key>Serial Number</key> <string>U21480AMLG6</string> <key>Software Version</key> <integer>21004288</integer> <key>Updater Family ID</key> <integer>1</integer> <key>Use Count</key> <integer>37</integer> </dict> <key>000A2700020BFD95</key> <dict> <key>Connected</key> <date>2004-03-05T04:05:11Z</date> <key>Firmware Version</key> <integer>306</integer> <key>ID</key> <string>000A2700020BFD95</string> <key>Software Version</key> <integer>34635776</integer>
where i underlined there, i think thats going to be where the serial number is. im pretty sure that is my old ipod, which was a rev A 5GB model, so your serial number should be SIMILAR to that one.

I just want to back up the belief that the iPod's serial number is in the mentioned file. I checked my own file and it listed the serial numbers of both iPods I've had connected to this Mac. Nice to know it's there - just in case.
