I'm wanting to get a G5 and a Cinema Display to run Maya. Would a 20" be cramped still w/ Maya or should I spring for the 23 inch which feels to roomy for other apps?

the more monitor real estate you can afford, the better.

I have used Maya only once or twice (on a friend's PC at that). However on his 21" CRT, it looked very cramped to me. Remember when you have multiple views of a scene, heaps of pallettes, toolbars, controllers, cameras, timelines - it all gets pretty full on.

I would 100% go for the 23" if Maya is something you use semi-regularly.

23", but you may want to consider buying a hp L2335! It is equivalent (and more in terms of connection options and built-in features) to an Apple 23" but costs only about as much as an Apple 20". Of course it's not Aluminium!
I have one of these and no regrets ;-)

storer ... that sig of yours makes me laugh a little harder every time I see it. The only sig I've ever seen that gets funnier with each viewing. Its especially funny when it pops up outside the lounge in one of these "serious" forums.

I looked at the 23" Cinema for a while but then I went into CompUSA I noticed pinkish greys on the store display. I had called our local Apple rep for CompUSA asking on the return policy but he didn't get back to me until today. During the time he was off from work I read all the positive reviews of the HP L2335 over at http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=757963 and Keiretsu recommendation. I decided to take it easy on the wallet this time and went with the HP. I got it for $1530 over at CDW but that's with our corporate discount, their list price is $1590 or somewhere close to that.

I must say I am very impressed with this display. The biggest selling feature for me is the HP 3-year warranty. Then came the component, DVI, VGA, s-video and composite video inputs. I don't think I'll ever use them except for the VGA for a second computer but it's nice to know they're there if I need them.

Sure it's not Apples but it does match the G5. Here's a pic of the setup. http://homepage.mac.com/bcarter/pictures/G5-HPL2335.jpg .

If anyone else is reading this wondering whether they should get the 20" or the 23" I would first suggest that they go to see them in person. But I would also say that 23" isn't actually as big as you might think. I think 20" will soon be the standard. I recently got a 23" and was surprised that it wasn't quite as massive as I thought (this is partially because I had only seen the previous generation of cinema displays in person, and their cases made them seem a lot larger even though the screen size is the same).

Hi Keiretsu and Nerd,

I have used an HP 17inch tft before, and even though it has good brightness, the screen quality in terms of overall tone is just not as good as the Apple's. I am wondering whether the HP 23" may suffer from the same problem. I hooked it up to my powerbook and I can see the difference in terms of contrast and brightness. While the powerbook 17" display may not be as bright as the HP's tft, it has a good overall consistent brightness and contrast which really helps with graphic orientated work. I attempted to calibrate it as close as to the quality of the powerbook's, its just not the same. Have you guys compare the quality side by side with Apple's display? (don't compare it to the Alum. display for the moment because the current badge is suffering from pink overtone)

cheers.

We have HP 20" (1600x1200) LCDs on a few of the 3D workstations at work, and they are very nice. I can't comment on color accuracy (since what we do doesn't require hyperaccurate colors) but the screen brightness is pretty uniform.

I have a 20" Dell FP2001 on my G4 at the office, and that too is a nice display. Not quite as bright as I'd like, but otherwise very good.

Nerd - your setup is nice. The HP does appear to match the G5 very well.

I'm not to sure what to think anymore. The HP is said to use the LG display as well as Apple. I have never ever had a monitor that I thought was perfect. I just got a new Viewsonic LCD at work and it looks way to blue compared to the CTX one I just gave another employee thinking I would get a better one. I'll have to take the CTX back.

With that said I think I get used to the way a monitor looks so when I get a new one I don't think the color, brightness, contrast, etc. is right. This HP I think is on the warm side for the whites (red) where mine at work is cold (blue). When my Philips HD LCD is on SD and has the grey bars up on the sides I think there is a little of green in the grey. I was having some OCD last night comparing every display and TV in the house.

The brightness on this HP is dimmer then that new Viewsonic I just got at work but I also feel that Viewsonic is out of control with the brightness. To much. This HP is very uniform, I don't see the brightness dropping off to the sides, middle or anything like that. I did calibrate it 3 different times and I get a different result each time (very small difference, tired eyes?). I'm also running it at the native white point. I'm not a graphic designer but I am in TV engineering so I think I am just as sensitive to uncalibrated displays sometimes.

I'm still happy with the purchase and after running through the expert mode in the display setup the LCD is looking great. Solagratia, CompUSA has the consumer version which is the same thing but it has built in speakers and the display is a different color. It's the F2304. That would give you a good comparison since they should also have the Apple displays in stock. I chose the L2335 over the F2304 because it's about $200 cheaper and longer warranty.

Brad

Edit:
Any of you guys good at graphics? I would like to do something with the Bjork desktop background I had on the dual monitor setup so I can use it with the 23". Here's the link if any of you are interested in coming up with something cool.

I was in the same situation as you, but i craved in and purchased the 23" due to my little "theory", I owned a 17" Apple display, upgrading to a 20" would give me a little bit more of a ummphh and "new toy" factor but with a 23" it gives me a much greater sense of "upgrade" and "ummpp" factor . It is worth every $$ there is, other than the increased real estate that one can enjoy (especially with MAYA and final cut pro etc etc), the resolution and picture quality is top notch.

Go as far as your $$ can stretch.

Hope this helps mate.
