i had a series of problems not worth getting into but i now find myself with a dead ipod. during the firmware update, it froze and now its a paperweight.

the ipod won't be recognized by my computer, obviously. and it wont give me an apple logo, a sad ipod, anything.

i've already given it the 24 hours of dead time, hoping the battery would run out and it would reset but nothing changed.

i'm pretty sure the problem here is the ipod has no software on it as the firmware update hung indefinitely and it hasn't worked since.

is there anyway to force a firmware load to an ipod without being able to start it by conventional means? i'm willing to open the case if need be.

I assume that because it has only half the software loaded the normal rest (Play & Menu) does nothing.

Someone said that they have resurrected theirs a few times by disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it (this thread)

Does forcing the iPod into Disk Mode work? (Hold Previous & Next for 5 secs)

What generation iPod is it?

yes, thats right. seems like none of the software is loaded - does absolutely nothing. it doesnt even wake from sleep. i've tried play/menu every 8 hours for the last 2 days while connected to the adapter, then i disconnect it in hopes the battery runs down.

right, i've considered this method but haven't done this yet. most of what i've read suggests this just forces the battery to stop powering the unit to wake it. mine has been unpowered long enough that i think this won't work but i'll probably try it eventually.

no, i can't get it to wake at all.

its a first gen.
