I currently have a 15Gb iPod and I realize I have about 40GB or more of music.
My ibook only have a 10GB harddrive, so I have to install like 3GB of music on my ibook, transfer it to my iPod, then delete it off my ibook HD and repeat as necessary.
I'm getting sick of that.
I was thinking I should buy an external HD and keep all my music on there so I have access to it all at home. Basically the ultimate CD changer.
I was thinking about buying the Lacie HD that apple sells? Are those good? Or are those overkill if I'm only going to use the drive for music?
I was also thinking I might just buy the iPod Mini because I like it's size and no matter what size iPod I get (even the 40GB) I won't be able to get all the music I have on it and will always have to keep updating my music.
I really was thinking the mini-Ipod and just every few weeks, changing around what music I put on there. Keeping it fresh so I never get bored. Like I used to do before I had the iPod. I didn't take everything I own with me.
I took like 5 or 6 CDS for the trip. 1000 songs is plenty for one trip to anywhere.
this idea makes me excited. I feel that with my 15GB i don't hear 13GB of the songs anyway. Even on shuffle I swear it only plays the same 200 songs.
anyone else do this? Have their huge music collection on an external hardrive and then just keep changing around their iPod every week or so?
sounds like fun actually.

The worst thing about having a failing memory is..... no, it's gone.

Other threads on this.
The externals work quite well for keeping the music collection.
You can reset the music folder to your external (I've used CCC and make it bootable)
However, if you want to keep the music on the external and not have to connect it to your iBook each time you want to run iTunes, keep the hard drive iTunes music folder with whatever you want (if anything). Keep the full music collection on your external and manually manage your iPod. It won't matter if your external is plugged in and you don't need to keep any music on the hard drive. Then just use the external when you want to change the music on your iPod.

BTW, along with my 40, I also have a Mini (two actually as my g/f uses the second). I've found I'm using the Mini quite often for the commute to work and at the gym and in the office and so I'm taking my 40 out less and less (unless I'm taking a drive somewhere or flying). The method I mentioned above works perfectly with 3 iPods/Minis as well.
