I bought an iPod mini for my brother for his birthday and a week later his house was robbed and the mini was stolen too. My credit card company recovered my funds since I charged it so I was going to get him another mini.
I just realized that it's been 8 months since the intro of the mini. I am wondering if Apple may update it soon and if I should wait a bit longer?
Anyone heard any rumors or should I just bite the bullet and hope not to get burned soon?

I'd love to see higher capacity iPod mini's released, but Apple still has to fix supply and demand issues surrounding this product. Only recently, has the iPod mini become more available in this area and it is still selling like hot cakes.

I'd like to buy a rev b version of the mini, as more HD space is required so I can also use it to back up some of my files. I don't really mind waiting for it to be released, but I do mind waiting 6 months for it to become readily available after it has been released. If Apple Canada drops the price of the current mini from $349 down to $299 Cdn, I will seriously be tempted to buy one.

I think a price drop is far more likely of happening anytime soon than a revision to this product.

Unlikely. A feature bump is waaaaaaay more likely than any price drop. But nothing is imminent.

That depends, is Hitachi making anything larger than a 4GB microdrive? Is anyone?

Firmware may change, but I honestly think that the iPod mini will stay in its current form until it has to change. Right now, it doesn't.

I think they are coming out with a 5. Not much of an upgrade really.

yeah .. the carbon and the muvo 2 feature five gig hdd's ...

interesting how rio carbon is smaller b/c the mini has a bigger click wheel thing ...
and paul shilling mentioned the mini having 5gb (it was a slip up i'm sure ... i think he meant five colors ... but he didnt retract his statement... i originally assumed the carbon was haunting his dreams .. but maybe he saw a revision memo =P)

I don't think the carbon uses the same type of drive does it?

I don't think they'll update it unless they can offer 50% or 100% more storage.

I'd ditch my rev b 10 GIG iPod for an 8 or 10 gig Mini any day. I'm sure a lot of people would, which would make them highly popular.

Exactly, same here, so would I. A ten Gig Mini would be perfect for me.

As the poster above pointed, out, when (and it is just a matter of WHEN, even if when takes awhile...) they become available, I'm not so happy to wait once they are released, and eBay scalpers don't help. Oh well, keep the my 10GB 3G, maybe sell it and wait.

Btw, I saw a Grandma with an iPod on the subway here in Boston. Damn, she's hot!

i believe that you are correct. the ipod mini uses a 1" hard drive. this lets it be "3.6 by 2.0 by 0.5 inches" as per apple's specs. the rio carbon, on the other hand, is "2.5 in x 0.6 in x 3.3 in".

2.5" vs. 2.0" -- i think that would be large enough to allow rio to use a 1.8" hard drive instead. (too bad all of the articles i could find on the rio carbon were fluffy enough to not mention the physical platter size of the hard drive used...)

The Rio Carbon uses a 5gb Microdrove from Seagate. That is the biggest storage capacity for a microdrive right now.

The Rio Carbon has a voice recorder, and longer battery life then the mini. It's possible Apple might add such features down the road, but I have no clue when they might revise it.

Honestly, if you have no need for AAC support, the Rio Carbon might be worth a look. It supports the Mac just fine and works with iTunes.
