I currently have a lacie firewire harddrive. I'm trying to get some files on it and transfer them to my friend's pc laptop (he has a firewire card).
When I plug the firewire drive into his computer, it won't recognize the harddrive. What gives?

Anybody know why his computer can't see the harddrive?

Please, can somebody help??

I got it at the beginning of this year and just plugged it into my mac ( ti powerbook) and it started working.
So, yes?

Plug it into your Mac, then open Disk Utility. When you select the hard drive you should be able to tell what file system its in.
My guess is HFS+ (Mac OS file system), which a PC is unable to read.

By the way, what OS is your friend running? MS Windows something or GNU/Linux?

Can I switch back and forth without losing anything on the hard drive?

How do I switch it to make it recognized by the pc?

You need to use something like MacOpener:
http://www.dataviz.com/products/macopener/index.html
on the PC. That will allow windows to read the HFS disk. They do say however that it hasn't been tested with firewire drives other than the iPod. There are a number of other programs to read mac volumes in windows, just google for them.

No, you have to format it either Mac or PC. Mac can read PC format but you can't put Mac apps or fonts/stuffit files on a PC or it will mess up the files.
