Ok, my Powerbook is dead. I got a number of songs on my iPod I bought on iTunes. How can I transfer the songs from my iPod to my new Mac? I'm sure there is an easy way to do this I just don't know how.
help please.

Your song purchased at iTune Music store allows to be transferred to three machines. All you need to do is to authorize your new Mac with iTune Music store, and go to iTune menu "Advanced | Check for Purchased Music", it will download all the songs you have purchased to your new Mac again. Then you resync iPod with the new Mac. Woa La!
There are plenty of hacks out there to unlock your iPod, which allow you to copy the songs back to the Mac. But if I am not mistaken, each AAC song is locked down to the specific machine (i.e. your dead Mac), therefore you cannot play those AAC files from your iPod on your new Mac at all.
Since you probably cannot boot up your old Mac, you might need to call Apple to deauthorize your old Mac as a activated machine, otherwise you loose one eligible machine to play the songs you bought.
Hope this will help.

That's bad info. "Check For Purchased Music" only looks for songs purchased but not yet downloaded. Once you've downloaded the song, you can't download it again. This is why Apple recommends backing up all purchased music.

I was just going to say the same thing.
Once a tune is downloaded successfully then you can't download it again to any machine.
You can back tunes up and move them to other authorised machines.
The only way to get your music back is to use software to get them off your iPod, have a look at www.versiontracker.com , search for iPod, you will find various bits of software that do the job, take your pick.

I hope that I am not halluciated, but I admit that it does not work any more.
I am the early iPod/iTune adopter. I started to purchase iTune music online when it first came out in April, and when I switched from iBook to PowerBook G4 last september, I remember that I did the exact thing I suggested and downloaded the purchased songs again to my new PowerBook.
I also noticed that now you can play the purchased songs up to 5 machines instead of 3 machines as iTune store came first alive. Apple must have changed their license agreement and download mechanism.
Too bad that it works as it is now. I guess that I will start backing up songs I purchased.

Your recollection is incorrect. It's never worked that way.

Also, it is iTunes, not iTune.

They changed it to 5 computers instead of 3 when they lowered the total amount of identical burned playlists from 10 to 7 (I think).
