If you are talking about something like the Griffin iTrip, they are ok but don't expect great sound. The problem that I have ran into is all stations in my area are taken or they have bleed over from a station. If the area you live in isn't like that you should be good to go. Just don't expect the sound to get as good as if it where hard wired in. If that isn't an issue you should be fine on that.

The iTrip is easy to use but I wouldn't suggest trying to change stations while in heavy traffic. It runs off the iPod battery so you will lose battery life but it is very little. There are other FM devices for the iPod that run on AA (I think) batteries. I haven't used one so I can say how good they are.

Here is what I did to use my iPod in my car:

It works great. You would just need to buy an AUX cable for about $4. It plugs into the front of the deck and the other end plugs into the headphone jack on the iPod.

I just bought and subsequently returned an iTrip. It was horrible--I couldn't find a station with clear reception. Probably because there are so many radio stations in the Greater Toronto Area, so you could get lucky if you live in the sticks.

The iTrip is just horrible if you're in an urban setting with few FM frequency options.
The world needs more Canada.

Just got back from the store buying the Monster Cable iCarPlay. Sound isn't as good as "real" FM and nowhere near as good as a CD, but I experienced no noticeable static or noise on the half hour drive home in the Boston area.

All in all I think the convenience of having my entire music collection in my car outweighs the non-optimal sound quality.

The sound quality is no way near fm quality (It may be just me - I live in Melbourne Australia).

But then again, the ability to have like heaps of music on the go is appealing to me, and hence I still use the itrip (if I could I would use the cassette input but my car doesnt have a cassette deck - what a bummer!)

It is your call mate.

I have used the tunecast II and although the sound quality wasn't the best it was decent and static free. It was powerful enough that I didn't even have to find a clear radio station, it would just overpower any one I chose. It ran on 2 AAA's but could also be used with one of the ipod car adapters. I found that I used it at home a lot too before I got the ipod by connecting it to my desktop and using my ati remote wonder to change songs.
