I'm looking to buy a CompactFlash card reader for when I'm traveling so I can't conserver batteries but still back up pictures as they take them. There are hundreds out there but I have a small set of criteria that I'm looking for and was hoping that somebody may have some suggestions.

I'm looking for a reader with at least some combination if not all of the following:
  • small
  • fast
  • looks good

Any help would be appreciated.

If you have a 15 or 17" PowerBook, you can use a PC Card adapter, which you can get on eBay for like $5. You plug the CF card into it, and then it into the PowerBook.

Otherwise, I'd just suggest a normal USB multi-card reader like SanDisk's USB 2.0 6-in-1 and 8-in-1 readers.

Those aren't very fast though. Unless you get a 32 bit CardBus adaptor like Lexar's. And speaking of Lexar... Their Firewire CF card reader is, I'm pretty sure, the fastest out there currently (though there is some info today about a new Lexar reader being announced). This reader is also very small and has a detachable FW cable, making it easy to transport. I use mine with a thin Apple FW cable for even more transportability. As for looks, you can decide for yourself.

The PC Card ones are plenty fast -- a normal CF card cannot benefit from CardBus, because CompactFlash is simply PC Card with less pins! Some of the really high-speed cards use special transfer modes, perhaps the CardBus reader uses a similar approach.

There may be some CardBus-enabled CF cards out there, but I haven't heard of any.

Regardless, unless you use a card over 32x, it is theoretically and technically impossible to gain any speed from the CardBus unit, and the $5 PC Card adapter will do nicely. I use a PC Card adapter with my 12x CF card and it's faster than using USB 2.

Hey, the guy (or gal) specified FAST as a criteria. If s/he spends the money on a FAST reader and uses slow cards, that's his/her problem I reckon. I use fast CF cards and I definitely see a difference between a standard PC card reader and a FireWire card reader. FW is much faster. I just (finally, since I ordered it in June) got my Lexar CardBus reader, but haven't done any speed tests yet. When I do, I'll post back.
