i have a powerbook with a 80gb hard drive and its full. i need to get an external hard drive. i wanted to spend about $250 or less and since my powerbook has fw 800, i would like it to use that.
that being said, there are so many hard drives and i'm just confused. i know lacie makes a few, but even their drives has several version of the same thing.
i'm most concerned with quality and warranty. any suggestions i could look into?
thanks everyone.

dealmac.com for a Seagate HD - 5 year warranty.
macsales.com for a clear "ICE" enclosure.

Just curious but why do you need the transfer speeds of firewire 800?
To say you want it because you have the ability to use it just does not explain much of a rationale.
Firewire 800 is great but how often are people going to transfer 10 gigs of data at once? Are you using it for video editing with FCP? For most people's needs the speeds of FW400 is more than adequate for day to day use. If you want to spend all the money you are of course free to but you could get a pretty nice and HUGE external firewire enclosure for half the price. Unless you have to transfer huge files in two minutes instead of three minutes then I think you should rethink your needs.

its mainly for video editing and loading / unloading film.
but i thought firewire 800 for longevity and figured it'd be worthwhile.

The physical dimensions of hard drives are industry standard. It will fit.

You can find these at many online stores - they just have different branding on them. I think they are all made in taiwan, but they have oxford chips and work well.

drives come in 2.5" and 3.5". The cases are usually considered 'notebook (2.5)' or 'desktop (3.5).'
