I have a Palm Vx and some no-name Serial-USB converter. If I hook them up with my PowerBook running Panther they won't work with HotSync.

HotSync is set to listen on the USB and support PalmConnect (to hook up serial Palm devices via USB). It is enabled too. The Palm is set to sync via its serial port. The adapter has a HotSync button, but when I press it nothing happens (except a blink of the 'TX' LED). The adapter works, because my Palm charges from the USB bus and the LED on the charger shows it's active. The HotSync software works with my Treo 180 so I guess the software install is OK.

What's missing? Do I need some kind of special driver for the Serial-USB converter?

I'd really appreciate any help. I have no idea what's wrong here.

I have almost the same setup - a Palm Vx, and a Serial->USB converter, thoug this is from Palm.
I have checked my settings - they match yours. The only thing I can think of, is if you have selected to enable hotsync software at system startup. But then again, if it works with your Treo, then it should be ok.

What happends if you use the cradle and presses that hotsync button - or use the button at your Palm? (In the 'HotSync' program)

I can't use the cradle because it's got a serial plug and my PowerBook only has USB. The Serial-USB converter I'm using goes right from the Palm (not the cradle) to the Mac. The converter has a HotSync button and its light is on (showing that it sees the powered USB bus), but pressing the button has no consequence at all. That's what I don't understand. Everything is there and working, but the HotSync won't happen.

Does the converter need a driver? Is there a generic driver for such converters?
