I know that IDE drives in older G4s can only address ~137GB. Is there a similar limit for external Firewire drives? ie. if I buy a new 250GB external FW drive, will I be able to use all 250GB worth?

I had a similar question several months ago and the answer is, yes, you can address it all, because of it being connected via firewire. Do a search, and you may be able to find some references to this. Someone laid it out very clearly, and I found it very useful.

Depends on the controller being used in the enclosure. Most newer ones should have up to 300Gb support, so it should say if it doesn't or does.

The limitation is based on the ATA controller in the G4. FireWire drives have their own controllers.
