I just bought a DVD burner, Pioneer DVR-108, for my G4 eMac 1.0Ghz PowerPC OS 10.2.8 (Combo drive). However, I just removed my combo drive and installed the new superdrive (very easy) tonight, but my system still doesn't recognize the drive as a DVD burner. The drive is listed as a CD-RW/DVD-R drive in Devices & Volumes and it states that "Disc Burning is Not Supported." I can't even burn a CD now. This is even worse than when I started! Is there something else I need to do? Why isn't it just "plug and play" like others have stated? Is is because it is the "latest version?" Do I need a firmware upgrade? Does anyone have any ideas?
This is how the drive was advertised on eBay:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DRIVE ONLY (no drivers & no software) just install and use any of Apple's iApps!
This Model is 100% compatible with Mac OS 10.2 10.3, iDVD, iPhoto, and other iApps which is important because without hacks Apple only supports Pioneer Brand drives
Instant and Full Support with Apple's built in SuperDrive Drivers
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thanks.

It's a very new drive and I don't think support has been built in for the drive yet. That's what happened when the DVR-107 first came out... shortly after it became available, the 10.3.3 update was released which provided full compatibility.
You can always try waiting for an OS update to bring support, or you can try something like Patchburn II (available at www.xlr8yourmac.com).

Luca,
The Patchburn (actually 3 now), worked perfectly!!! I am now burning CDs and DVDs from iTunes and iDVD to the new DVR-108. Your advice was right on the money and saved me tons of time! Thank you so much!
Chet

chartley8 - I am doing the same thing and am having an issue where burning -RW discs with the the Pioneer DVR-108 works, and it verifies, but when the Apple DVD Player tries to play it after the burn, it complains about an unreadable file. If I open the VIDEO_TS folder from the source, it works fine. The other strange thing, is that it will play in my Sony DVD Player. however if this is a drive problem, I want to return it before the 30 day return expires in a couple weeks. If you can try burning a -RW and see if you get the same symptoms. that may indicate that its a Patchburn problem of some sort.. Other -R media seems to be ok.
