awful, just awful
All these 'iPod killer' articles always measure capacity, battery life and price against the iPod, but none dares to end the comparison with the words "but it looks ****ing awful...", which is the only honest way to end a news release about any Virgin or Creative device.

they not only fail to mention the crap aesthetics of these so called "iPod killers" but also the fact that the iPod - just like OS X - is so much more user friendly.

it would be a pain on that virgin player having the scrolling differant from the volume.

surprised that virgin would market something so...uncool.
looks like something you'd buy at home depot.

i'm waiting for a 10gig mini-ipod...THAT would make me spend $.

but apple is still way ahead of the game!

The makers of these would-be iPod killers don't seem to realize that they have to offer something really compelling that the iPod doesn't or they'll never be able to overcome the inertia that it's already built up. Even making something that is just as good as an iPod (which this isn't) would probably not succeed, since people would rather just get an iPod.

It does look like a stud-finder or electronic tape measure, now that you mention it.

I wouldn't so summarily dismiss every iPod alternative, however. I'm sure that Virgin thing will fit the bill for someone, as does the Sony "iPod killer." Having 80% market share is great for the iPod, but I hardly think it's sustainable... Now matter how zealous we defend it.
