I would like to convert some old home movies to DVDs using my superdrive-equipped dual G4. I believe the Formac Studio can do this but is that the best way to go? I'd like to be able to import the video into iMovie for editing.

I guess I should note that they're currently on VHS tapes...

The Formac will work, but I suggest buying an actual DV camera. Most all have digital pass-through to iMovie, and, when you're done with the VHS, you can make new memories with the DV camera.

A Canon ZR-80 camcorder can be had for around $325.

I agree that you should get a camcorder to do this even if it adds a step. You could in theory even use a now cheap eye-tv and plug a vcr into it but you will not get the same quality and its difficult to edit. I really don't know much about the current camcorder market so either get the canon mentioned or do some research and get a better one.

If you have a need for a digital camcorder, go that route. As mentioned, most (though not all - check first!) will perform a pass-through function that allows you to hook up an analog video source and record into iMovie.

If, however, you don't want a digital camcorder, there are many devices that will perform the function standalone, for about $200. I've been using the since-discontinued Dazzle Hollywood DV Bridge (or whatever the heck it's called). It works fine. I would assume that most of the ones on the market, including the Formac, do a reasonable job. I know that the Mac magazines (MacWorld, MacAddict, etc.) review this stuff from time to time. Can't remember the latest recommendations. I'm sure there are plenty of people here who can give advice.
