I've been using scanners since the good 'ol Parallel and SCSI days! But, our Canon N1240U is showing its wear. I'd like a scanner with these two qualities:

1) USB-power. This is a nice feature, especially when travelling.
2) TWAIN compliance. I'm looking for system-wide availability (read: Acrobat OCR).

Any recommendations, ideas about current scanners, and experiences, etc. appreciated.

Thanks!

AFAIK only the Canon LiDE-series scanners are USB bus powered.

That kinda sucks. Not a big deal, although the (very small, turn-of-the-century built-in) space under my desk is getting a bit cramped.

Alas.

What about best TWAIN/no-crashes-like-OS-9-days/reliable/slim/good-looking scanners?

Thanks.

I have a Canon LIDE 30 and it works great with both my PC and my Powerbook. It's very small and USB powered. It's smaller than some of my friend's wintell laptops which makes it very portable. I can fit my scanner and my powerbook in my crumpler bag if needed...

Scan quality is good and I've never had a problem with it crashing. It's not a high end scanner by any means, but it was a great balance of price vs features for me since I don't need to scan very much.
