I have an external fujitsu 40gb drive in a BlueEye Xeasy dual USB 2.0/1394 (ie 400) firewire enclosure and it seems to work quite well with my PowerBook.

Now I know I cannot format a partition on a USB only device to use as a bootable clone (using Disk Utility>Restore function in OSX), this can only be achieved on a firewire device. My question is does it matter whether it is firewire 400 or 800 to be bootable?
PowerBook Rev C 12 " Combo, 1.25 gig ram, OSX 10.3.5, Airport Express, iPod 3G, Fuji Finepix F700, Harmon Kardon Sound Sticks II.

No.

But you're aware that the 12" Powerbook only does FW 400, in any case.

If formatted properly, you can boot from most USB drives.
