With a soon to come release of a portable XM radio, an iPod with built in XM radio is not out of reach.

would buy one of these in a heartbeat...with or without a ipod attached.

I've rented a few cars that have had XM & Sirrus and must say that satellite radio is really awesome.

A definite winner!

Would you have to wear a hat with a dish on top of it?

Nope, just a baseball cap with an antenna on the back. Like Elroy Jetson.

You know what would be cool is if Apple included a free subscription or discount price to XM or Sirrus for .mac subscribers.

Slick shoes?!! Are you crazy?!!

The antenna is going to be located in the earphones.

The RIAA is not going to let XM or Sirius allow hardware to be developed or sold where the potential exist to record digital content. They have already attempted to have legislature created to prevent this and just recently there was a big hullabaloo about the XMPCR that when connected to a PC and with the right software allowed for the recording of the streams coming from XM.
Cheers,

Just say "NO" to PLASTIC SPEAKERS!!

Excuse this foreigner in the thread, but what is XM Radio, and how does it differ to 'normal' radio?

I believe XM radio in the states is digital radio - in the UK digital radio goes by the acronym DAB, and is free whereas in the states you have to pay a subscription fee.

No, XM Radio and Sirus are satellite radio. While these services do have digital signals they are entirely separate from terrestrial digital radio broadcasts.

XM & Cirrus satellite radio operate nationwide in the USA... so you can drive from NYC to Calinfornia listing to the same radio station if you wanted to ..each have at least 100 channels of digital music in just about all formats you could possibly imagine as well as many talk radio programs & live audio feeds from PBS/Fox News/CNN which are really handy.

I didn't think it was that great of a idea at first until I lucked out on a upgrade on a rental car that had it one time. In the US most premium cars now come with satellie radio installed...it works similar to a radio but you are receiving the signal from a satelitte (I wish I could spell that word..sorry)....instead of a radio transmitter.

After 10 minutes of using it I was absolutely in love with it. Most of the music stations are commercial free. Also the music you are listening to is identified by song name/artist which is a great feature.

I sincerely hope that one of these services teams with Apple. I will be getting one no matter if its with Apple or not just because I've been waiting for a portable version.

If Apple is not partnered with whoever this is rumored to be, they could have their first competition on their hands. I have a 4 gig mini ipod which is nice enough, but to have access to fresh commercial free music all the time instead of my old MP3 collection would be nice.

That would be really sad, but I agree: it might be possible to hack the iPod to record the digital stream.

Maybe there is a way for Apple to design a hack-barrier good enough for the RIAA to allow XM in an iPod.

So what type of antenna does either the car or a portable need for XM? I thought satellites always needed a dish or huge antenna.

Really small. They are about the size of a pack of matches now. XM Micro Antenna

I have XM in the wife's Escape (Delphi Unit) and absolutely love it. Probably going to get the integrated XM kit for my G35 around Christmas time.

I'd buy an Ipod/XM in a heartbeat.
