Any reason not to buy an older iPod?

I have been thinking about buying an older iPod just for music to take my morning walk by. I really would not use one for more than that, I don't think, so size of hard drive, etc. is not so important. Wondering, though, would an older one (perhaps from eBay) be compatible with my PB and iTunes (fully updated) to get music onto it? What should I look for/stay away from when looking at iPods? Running Panther with all the updates, and expect to go to Tiger when it comes out.
Thanks for any suggestions!

As long as you don't care about the weight and size you should do it. The only thing you should check is the battery..

Just make sure you have the iPod updates and you should be fine, I sold my 5GB iPod about 6 months ago for $150 and it was working fine then and should still be working great. It's slightly bigger but never was a problem carrying around, just make sure it holds atleast an hour of use, mine had about 2 1/2hr playback time.

which really is no big deal at all.
I've replaced batteries on every generation. 20 minute job, tops.

But it costs a lot so that defies to point of buying an older one. You could get a newer one for the same price.

My husband has an older (firewire only -- can't remember which generation, though!) ipod and it works just fine. I recently got him one of the non-apple replacement batteries from Other World COmputing. It was 40 bucks, vs. the $100 that Apple was offering. (and I could have gotten a lower-level one for $30.)
It was very easy to replace and it works great. It's a viable option.
And I echo the e-bay suggestion. That's a great place to get something like that -- check the MacNN marketplace, too.
