I have a G4 iMac, not the new ones, but the ones with the half-sphere base and screen on the stem. I use the Apple pro speakers that came with it. All of a sudden the right one stopped working. I figure I had blown the speaker. So, I got a new pair of pro speakers. I just plugged them in now, and the right side still doesn't work. Left side is fine. This makes me think that something is wrong with my computer. I have check, re-checked, and re-re-checked every panel I can think of that has anything to do with sound. ALL balances are set to the middle.
What on earth could it be?!

No, on the iMacs the pro speakers have the own devoted port. Headphones work perfectly fine.

sounds like hardware...maybe.
could be the audio connection from the mac itself.
i'd call apple, or check the discussions on the apple site, see if anyone has a similar problem.
good luck!

The Apple pro speakers, while nice looking, are simply a pain in the butt, especially with Mac OS 10.3 and up. My suggestion is before giving up, try this method (works for me)...
When starting/restarting your computer, do so with speakers unplugged. Once the computer is up and running, hit volume keys to see if the volume bezel has loaded -- if so go ahead and plug speakers in...
hit volume keys again. If your machine "hangs" or something, this would mean OS 10.3's retarded speaker driver is the issue. Unplug your speakers, now wait for a 'pop' or the volume adjust sound to come through again. Plug speakers in again and they'll work normally.
I know it's weird, but both my g4 and my bro's imac have that problem. Without doing the above, my bro's imac only outputs on the left speaker until after maybe 15 minutes (but usually the audio hangs entirely until then).
If anything, might be time to get some new speakers There's always the HK soundsticks, or creature speakers -- both have similar appearance and sound (Actually, if you don't have an isub, the pro speakers alone don't sound that great, so this would sound better)

My guess is the physical connection between the speaker cable anmd iMac.

Replacing the speakers already rules out cabling.
I must also suggest that you avoid the SoundSticks and Creatures. While they seem to have a cult following in the Mac world, they're mediocre speakers at super-premium prices. All they have going for them is looks -- you can get similar sound for 1/4 the cost.

Yeah, I called Apple support and they ran me through a bunch of basic stuff, PRAM, etc.
But nothing changed. I am going to take it to the Apple store. They think it might be the speaker jack.
