I have two laptops now. One Powerbook, and a PC laptop that lacks a 6 pin firewire port, but does have a 4 pin one, and also 5 USB 2 ports on it. It however lacks a PS/2 port (yeah for legacy finally being dropped).

So, my dilemma is to find a firewire/USB2 2.5 inch drive enclosure that can do both of these:
Power off a 6 pin firewire port
Power off two USB ports

Finding this seems near impossible, with detailed searches on NewEgg revealing none meeting the above. Some could do USB and PS/2, some Firewire only.

The reason being is that even with 100gb drives, I know I will need more storage in either system from time to time.

Just incase someone comes across this in a search, I did end up finding this drive:

$30 at NewEgg at the time.

Hmm, that drive appears to be either/or: separate Firewire and USB2 versions. Did you run across any that were Firewire/USB2 combos (with the USB power)?

The problem is that USB plain and simply cannot supply enough power for many hard drives. USB bus-powered drives are usually pushing the limits of the port's power supply capability. FireWire, on the other hand, was designed with bus powering in mind.

I know it's not the answer you want, but I wouldn't recommend bus powering a drive from USB, period.

Try the Macally PHR-250cc enclosure. If you search the web, you should be able to find it for around $35.

You need the :
HD-201U2F USB 2.0 / 1394 Combo

Direct NewEgg link

Tooki, well aware of the USB power issue, that is why I got this drive enclosure. It has a single USB cable for the enclosure end, then it splits off to 2 USB plugs for the computer. 1 USB port can supply about .5 amps at 5v, and 2.5 inch drives need about 1 amp to spin. So 2 USB plugs gives it enough power. Sadly, most PC systems/laptops don't have a 6 Pin firewire port, and I wanted an enclosure I could use on PCs and Mac systems.
