I have a portable 2.5" external HD which is 4200rpm. It's actually quite a good little device. But I been thinking about using it to install applications that I don't use on a regular basis. (For example VPC 7, Acrobat Pro etc).
What I want to do is partition it and create a clone on that partition of my internal HD, then perhaps add these apps to the clone. (I back up my home folder as a dmg file in a seperate partition anyways).
I guess it won't be fast enought for VPC (I only use VPC to test my website under a windows platform nothing more) but what about Acrobat Pro or other apps?
Do you think 4200 rpm is enough speed to run any application from at all or should I get a 5400 rpm (I'm not aware of anything faster for a 2.5" portable HD).
Thanks

PowerBook 12" Combo 1.5Ghz 1.25GB Ram 100GB HDD - Yep it's PPC! I'll wait for the 3rd generation MacTel when they're at their best :)

I think the 5400 RPM drive option is worth it. Apps launch quicker, games load faster. Any disk intensive tasks are improved.

Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating

5400rpm is of course faster than 4200rpm, but since most laptops still come stock with 4200rpm drives they are clearly capable of opening applications. 7200rpm drives also exist but are more expensive. If money is a real issue get the 4200rpm otherwise get a 5400rpm drive, I think 7200rpm is overkill for your needs.

I even did some video editing with my iPod. As long as you just put some stuff on the hd, make backups and use it as a `storage container', a 4200 rpm drive will suffice.

Thanks for your advice everyone.
But I discovered in any event all iBooks have a 4200 rpm internal hard drive. My current external is the same so obviously it will do what I want.
I actually didn't check these details regarding my iBook and after speaking with Apple they explained it to me.
This is good because I will nowsave myself a few hundred bucks
