OK... I do not own any kind of an iPod...

...but this December I will be visiting a friend in England. This is a rare trip for me. He said, if I brought an iPod to England, he would upload all his bootleg Van Morrison concert recordings to the iPod... (which would make me very very happy...)

The idea sounds good... but when I get home, can I then download them to my own computer and use the iPod normally?

Speaking for myself, I wouldn't pirate the creative work of an artist, and therefore I wouldn't help someone else do so.

And the forum rules forbid promoting that kind of illegal activity anyway.

oh... i see...
personally I would never copy commercially available recordings, but I see concert recordings as a fan-oriented thing... like the way Dead-heads trade tapes of live concerts, because they love the band so much... no profits being made... just trading out of love...

but if those are the rules, whoops, my bad... I apologize to the MacNN Forums...

I haven't got a clue about Van Morisson, but I know that R.E.M. knowing allow the distribution of such non commercially available songs over the net. So this really is an area where rules seem to apply artist by artist. On the technical side, there are a fair few third party progs, some free, which allow you to upload music from your iPod to your mac. Just don't do it for 'normal' songs, as all that that does is result in more restricted DRMs and higher prices in the long run.

I never copy commercially released albums... as a commercial artist and occasional illustrator, with a brother who's a photographer, I have too much respect for intellectual property...

Now that it's been established that there is actually, contrary to popular belief, LEGALLY sharable music extant...

If he copies the music to your ipod via iTunes, you can listen to it on the 'Pod, but it's in a special hidden folder, where getting it off and onto your Mac at home can be a bitch, since there's no easy way to do this without third-party software, which Apple is constantly twisting and turning to disable (they have to, since their music store distribution deals hinge on hindering piracy wherever possible).

However, he can treat the iPod as a removable hard drive and just copy the music to the iPod in the Finder (just like any other kind of data), and you'll be able to pull it off via the Finder when you get home. You will not, however, be able to listen to it on the iPod on the trip back unless you *also* copy it via iTunes (which would put it on there twice).

You can enable the iPod's removable-hard-drive mode in the iPod preferences in iTunes.
