I need to upgrade my graphics card in the PM DP 533. I want to run the new ACD 23" and eventually a second flat planel. So what can I upgrade to with dual DVI? I'm not going to game, just photoshop and iApps.

thanks

I'm not sure whats in there now but its a 4x AGP slot, so would any AGP graphics card work or would any of the newer ones not? Does it matter if its 4x or 8x AGP?

thanks

If you're looking for an AGP card for your G4 that will be able to drive 2 DVI displays your only choice is the ATI Radeon 9800 PRO. The 8X AGP cards that work in Macs are G5 only as it has an AGP Pro 8X slot which has different pins than the 4X slot in your powermac.

Ok I noticed that some of the other offerings have 1 DVI and 1 VGA so I guess I have to find an older vga monitor or is there another option I'm not aware of?

thanks

Actually the only Mac video card which has two dvi ports is the Nvidia 6800, and that won't work in your G4's AGP slot. You will have to buy an adapter to use two DVI displays. Your best bet is to pick of one of the cards which has one DVI port and one ADC port, then pick up an ADC->DVI adapter. For the record the ATI 9800 Pro has one VGA and one DVI connection. ATI is going to release their X800 video card, it has two DVI connectors, but is G5 only..

Ok now I'm thinking of the radeon 9000. 128 MB memory. 4xAGP support. DVI and VGA. Its relatively cheap, gives me DVI for my ACD and then I can pick up a cheap 15" vga monitor for my pallettes.

Now, is 15 pin D-sub the same as VGA?

Can anyone comment on the radeon 9000? This is to get me by for a year or so until I get a new G5 PM.

thanks

The RADEON 9000 PRO MAC EDITION has both an ADC and a DVI-I port so that you can connect two DVI flat panel displays. You will need a ADC to DVI adapter( About $25.00) if the second display is non ADC.

There are actually three versions of the Radeon 9000 out there. Retail Radeon 9000 64MB has one VGA and one DVI port, the 64MB OEM model that cames from Apple has the ADC and DVI port. The latest version, the 128MB has one ADC and one DVI. To answer your question 15 pin D-Sub does = VGA The Radeon would be a good card to put in a DP533.. I forget to mention that one in my earlier posts... I had a 64MB Radeon 9000 OEM card in my DP1.25 G4 and it was very respectible. The only area where it falls significantly short of the latest cards is in gaming. I upgraded to a Radeon 9800pro retail card and was very happy with the improvement.. of course the cost was much higher. Here's a link to the Other World Computing website showing which ATI cards are available on the retail market. The ATI website talks about all of its Mac products in the same why, even if they are not currently on the retail market.

Go for the 9000. There's a lot of conflicting information in this thread that I want to clear up though. First of all, it's cheap to buy an adapter that converts ADC to DVI. It's going the other way that requires an expensive and large converter box. Secondly, there are many versions of the Radeon 9800 - the OEM version that comes with some G5s, the G5-only retail Radeon 9800 Pro SE, and the standard Radeon 9800 Pro retail. Only the last one will work in a G4, and it has only one digital output.

If you want dual digital monitors on a G4, you have plenty of options. The retail Radeon 9000 Pro 128 MB has DVI and ADC. The GeForce 4 Titanium also has DVI and ADC, and it's very fast. Also, OEM video cards that came with the mirrored drive door PowerMacs should all work for that - they all came with dual digital capability out of the box. So you have the 32 MB GeForce 4MX, the 64 MB Radeon 9000, and the 128 MB Radeon 9700 Pro. The 9700 Pro does not work in non-MDD PowerMacs though, due to voltage differences.

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

Hi guys,
I have just decided that I need a new video card for dual G4. Woulud you not agree that either one of the above would bring about a singificant performance boost, particularly for games ? At least compared to the card that came with my Mac (I believe the 64mb 9000).

But my question is, being the cost pretty much the same, would there be an obvious reason to go for either one ? What do you all think ?

thank you much
