Did this once and ended up with a fried Firewire port on my Rev A iPod. I really wouldn't suggest daisy chaining an iPod.

I've got a revA iPod, and as all my mp3s are on an external FW drive, and I have a PB, have needed to do this all the time - no problems, nearly three years and counting...

Daisy chaining doesn't do any harm whatsoever.

Weird. I've got my iPod daisy chained off an external HD and its recognized just fine on my machine (10.3.6).

And you're sure the FW cable on the Mac is good? You say it mounts to the XP machine, so we know the iPod itself is OK. When plugged in to the Mac with a known-good cable, does Disk Utility see it?
