How to get my Sony DV camera to work with OSX

I have a Sony miniDV Handycam , and when I plug it into my usb on my ibook it's not recognized , the photos from the camrea work , I can transfer files to iphoto but I can't do anything with video, what am i doing wrong, I tried iMovie but there are no options to import from camera.

Hi there,

You would need a USB cable to transfer the still photos into iPhoto, however you will need to use a firewire cable to transfer video. (Sony calls firewire 'ilink'). One you have you camera plugged into your computer via firewire, put it in VCR mode, and iMovie can do the rest for you.
